Asbestos and Lead-Based Paint Reimbursement Program (ARPA-Funded)

How NC Schools and Licensed Child Care Facilities Can Get Reimbursed

NC schools and licensed child care facilities may be eligible for reimbursement for work related to asbestos and lead.

The Clean Classrooms for Carolina Kids program inspects NC public schools and licensed child care facilities for asbestos and lead-based paint hazards. These inspections are free to NC public schools and licensed child care facilities.

The program is a joint effort by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Service (NCDHHS) and RTI International. It's funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and the General Assembly budgeted and approved $150 million of nonrecurring funds for this program.

Reimbursement is available until Dec. 31, 2026, or until funding is depleted, whichever comes first.
